What is Uranus Retrograde?

Uranus stations retrograde on 10th September 2026 at 5 degrees of Gemini, and it doesn't turn direct again until 8th February 2027 at 1 degree of Gemini. So that's roughly five months of it, right through the back end of the year and into the new one.

Quick explainer on what a retrograde actually is, because it gets talked about like the planet is doing something dramatic. From where we're stood on earth, Uranus looks like it's sliding backwards through the sky. It isn't. We're on the faster orbit and we overtake it, so we get that optical trick you get on the motorway when you pass a slower car and for a second it looks like it's rolling back. The planet keeps doing exactly what it was doing. Our view of it changes.

Outer planets spend a big chunk of every year retrograde, Uranus about five months of it, so this is normal and not a warning about anything. What changes is which direction the energy points.

Uranus rules the part of you that refuses to be told. Freedom, independence, sudden change, the lightning bolt moment, technology, the future, and that feeling when something in your life stops fitting overnight. When it's direct, the shakeup tends to arrive from outside you, the unexpected email or the plan that falls apart in an afternoon. Retrograde turns it inward instead. The restlessness builds where nobody can see it. You get the itch months before you do anything about it.

This one happens entirely in Gemini, which is the first full retrograde Uranus has spent in Gemini since the 1940s. Last year's dipped back into Taurus before it finished. Gemini is the mind, the mouth, information, learning, how you take things in and how you put them out. So the waking up is happening at the level of what you think and what you say.

One more date worth having. Uranus first crossed this stretch of sky back on 25th May 2026, and it won't be finished with it until 26th May 2027. If something in your life started making noise around the end of May, this is the same story coming back round for a second look.

Where it lands for you depends on your rising sign, because that's what sets which house Uranus is moving through in your chart. A five month retrograde through your second house is a very different five months to one through your seventh.
