Autumn Tarot Horoscope

Autumn's here, so I've pulled a three card forecast for every sign. One card for the start of autumn, one for the middle and one for the end, with an oracle card sitting alongside each of them. Taurus

King of Cups reversed

Your emotional weather sits right at the front as autumn opens. The right way up this card is the person who feels everything and stays steady anyway, and reversed that steadiness is wobbling. It carries the deep end of the water element in Pisces, so what's moving here doesn't announce itself in words. Either somebody close to you is leading from mood rather than solid ground, running hot and cold and leaving everyone else to arrange themselves around it, or you'll catch yourself doing the same when something lands harder than you expected.

It might show up as a person in charge who isn't holding things well, a parent, a boss, a partner whose reactions set the temperature of the room before anyone's said a word. It might show up as a decision arriving at the same moment as a wave of feeling, the two getting knotted together so you can't tell which one is driving. And it can be that specific sensation of being out of your depth in something you're supposed to be captain of, where you look competent on paper and you're swimming underneath it. None of that means you've lost your grip, the water just got a lot deeper for a bit.

Three of Swords

Something you've been half aware of gets said out loud at the start of autumn, and the relief in it arrives before the ache does. This card carries Saturn in Libra, which is the hard truth landing through a relationship, the fair verdict you didn't want and can't really argue with. It's the honest cut. A conversation that clears the air after months of circling, a truth you finally admit to yourself, a bridge you stop trying to hold up on your own. Saturn doesn't bring drama, it brings a fact that's been sitting there a long while waiting for you to look straight at it.

It might be a friendship you've outgrown, a plan that isn't going to happen the way you pictured it, or the moment you stop pretending a situation is fine when it hasn't been fine since spring. It might be a choice you made that turned out to be the wrong one, and this is where you say so without dressing it up. The pain in this card is mental more than emotional, the looping, the rerunning, the arguing with somebody in your head at two in the morning. Once it's actually said out loud the looping stops, and that's why the relief gets there first.

Say the sentence you've been editing in your head for weeks now. Cancer

Two of Swords

A decision is waiting for you as autumn starts and it wants an answer sooner than you'd like. This card is the Moon in Libra, which is exactly the problem, the feeling part of you weighing everything up while trying to keep everybody happy at the same time. Both options have something real going for them. Neither one comes with enough information to feel certain about it. So you sit there holding the scales, hoping one side tips on its own, and the longer you hold them the heavier they get in your hands.

You might be weighing up a job, a move, whether to say something to a person who won't want to hear it, or whether to stay somewhere comfortable that stopped working a while back. There's often somebody else's feelings in the mix, which is what makes this one so hard for you in particular. It can also be quieter than that, a choice you're avoiding by keeping yourself busy, or information you keep telling yourself you're waiting on when really it isn't coming. It can also be a decision somebody else wants you to make for them, which is not yours to carry no matter how much they'd like it to be. The stalling is costing you far more than either option ever would.

So pick one, then stand behind it like you meant it, because half of what makes a decision right is the conviction you bring to it afterwards. Take the blindfold off first by gathering whatever facts actually exist, then accept that the rest is unknowable and choose anyway. Carry yourself with some dignity while you do it. No apologising for having a position, no softening it into a maybe, no checking with six people first. Everyone takes their cue from you, so the moment you're clear they get clear too, and a lot more respect comes back than you're expecting.

You come into autumn holding the whole map. There's a vision in your head of the life you want and this season you can see the route to it and you believe you can walk it, and that belief is the fuel for everything else that happens. The card carries the long view of Sagittarius, the one that can see all the way to the far end of something and still fancies the walk. People pick up on that. Expect to be looked to, asked, followed, handed things to lead, because confidence like this is visible from across a room and everybody wants to stand near it.

A project wants someone to take charge of it. A room wants someone to finally say what everyone's been thinking. It might be your own life rather than anything public, the moment you stop asking whether you're allowed and start deciding where this goes instead. You can hold a huge idea and still be sensible about the very next step, which is a rarer combination than you'd think and worth using while you've got this much fire behind you. This is your season to be the one who calls it. You'll find people offering you things as well, so be a bit choosy, because not everything handed to a person with momentum is worth carrying.

So think bigger than feels reasonable. The version of the plan you're letting yourself have is smaller than the one you actually want, so go back and put the ambitious part in. Five of Wands

Autumn starts off noisy. Everyone's got an opinion, everyone wants their own way, and you're stood in the middle of it with your energy being tugged in five directions at once. This card is Saturn in Leo, so it's ego meeting resistance, a lot of people all convinced they're the one who's right and nobody willing to go first on backing down. It's rarely nasty with any of it. It's more that nothing can get decided because too many voices are talking at the same volume and not one of them will drop.

It might be an actual crowd, a family debate at home, a work team all pushing different plans, a group chat that never settles down. It might be entirely internal, every idea you've got shouting for attention so none of them get started. There's something useful buried in the racket though, because friction like this shows you very quickly what you actually care about enough to defend. It can also be somebody openly competing with you, which stings more than it should because you weren't even playing. You find out what your real priority is by noticing which argument you can't let go of.

So pick one. One project, one priority, one voice you're going to listen to, and let the rest of the noise carry on without you standing in it. You don't have to win every exchange and most of these clashes don't need a verdict from you at all, they burn themselves out given a week or so. Root yourself in what you want before you walk into any room where it'll be up for debate, and you'll find you can hold your line without ever raising your voice. Libra

Temperance reversed

Something's tipped out of balance coming into autumn and you can feel it in your body before you can name it. The right way up this card is Sagittarius, the patient mixing of two things until they become a third, right timing and right proportion. Reversed, the moderation has gone. Too much in one part of life and nothing left over for the rest, or you're trying to hurry along a situation that has its own speed and absolutely no interest in matching yours. It leaves you scattered in a way that's quite hard to explain to anybody.

It might be overdoing it in the obvious ways, the spending, the giving, the staying up far too late, the saying yes to everybody who asks. It might be pushing a person or a plan to move at your pace when they clearly aren't going to, and getting more frustrated every time they don't. Or one area of life has quietly eaten all the others while you weren't paying attention, and you've only just looked up and noticed that nothing else has had any of you for months. All of it is fixable, and the fixing starts straight away.

So start with the pace. Whatever you're trying to force, give it the time it needs and watch how much easier it gets to handle within days. Then look at the split, where you're pouring everything in and where there's nothing left over, and start moving a bit back the other way. Something catches your interest as autumn begins and before long you'll want to know absolutely everything about it. Pages don't carry a single planet the way the numbered cards do, they hold the whole element, so this is earth in its raw unformed state, the very start of a real skill rather than the polished end of one. That's the pull with this one. Not a passing fancy, but something you could still be doing in five years if you let yourself take it seriously enough to begin it.

A course, a craft, a job, a new way of eating or training, a side project, a subject you keep reading about at midnight when you should be asleep. It might arrive through a person who shows you something they love and accidentally hands it to you. It might come as a message, an offer, or a bit of information landing at exactly the right moment. There can be money in it eventually, because this suit always comes back to the material world, but that's later. It can also be a return to something you dropped years ago and never finished, which counts every bit as much as a brand new subject. Right now the curiosity itself is the signal, and it's worth following without needing to know where.

So start it small and start it now. Book the taster session, buy the cheap version of the kit, give it twenty minutes a few times a week rather than holding out for a clear month that never actually arrives. Be willing to be rubbish at it for a while, that's the entry fee and every single person who learns anything pays it. Seven of Wands

You're holding ground at the start of autumn and you're holding it well. This card carries Mars in Leo, which is fighting for something you love rather than fighting to win, the difference between defending your own creation and simply wanting to be right. Something you've built, or something you believe in, comes up for question, and you're the one standing in front of it. There's a bit of push and shove in that, no getting round it. There's also the quiet satisfaction of finding out that you actually will stand up for this.

It might be a project people don't understand yet and keep offering to improve. It might be a boundary you drew that somebody keeps testing to see whether you meant it. It might be a way of living that doesn't match what's expected of you at home, and all the questions that come with that. Whatever form it takes, you're higher up the hill than the people asking, which is easy to forget when several of them are talking at once. It can also be somebody wanting a piece of what you've made, credit, control, a say in how it gets run. You got here by doing something they haven't done.

Pick your ground before the conversation starts rather than halfway through it, because that's what keeps you steady when it gets lively. You don't owe anybody a full debate about your own life. Know your reason, say it the once, and let that be enough of an answer. Protect the part of this that brings you joy especially, the creative side, the playful side, the bit you do purely because you love it, because that's always the first casualty when you're busy defending yourself. Make something this season. Paint, write, build, dance about the kitchen. And check who's actually coming at you, because a fair bit of it is just noise.

Capricorn

The Sun reversed

Autumn's asking you to turn your light inward for a little while. The right way up this is the Sun itself, warmth and vitality and being seen for what you are, and reversed none of that has gone anywhere, it's just pointing the wrong way. Things look perfectly fine from the outside while feeling flat from in here. The joy a bit muted. The wins not landing the way you assumed they would back when you were chasing them. Nothing's gone wrong, you've been shining outward so long that you've lost track of what lights you up.

It shows up as going through the motions at work while doing absolutely everything correctly. It shows up as comparing your insides to everybody else's outsides and coming away feeling a bit strange about yourself. Or as a happiness you keep postponing until the next big milestone finally lands in your hands, at which point you'll set a new one and postpone it again. There can be a real success in here that simply didn't feel how you thought it would, and that's the moment really worth paying attention to, because it's telling you something about what you've been aiming at.

So go looking for yourself. Take yourself off somewhere quiet and answer the question honestly, what do you actually enjoy now, as the person you are today rather than the one you were five years ago. Then take one of those answers and put it into your week, and keep it there even when you're busy. Notice what's already good while you're at it, out loud, on paper, before you go to sleep, because gratitude sounds soft but it really is the switch that puts the light back on. A spark lands early in autumn and it feels a little like being sixteen again. Pages hold the whole of their element rather than one planet, so this is fire before it's been aimed anywhere, all enthusiasm and no plan, and that's the best part of it. Something just grabs hold of you. An idea, a class, a trip, a project you can't stop thinking about, and you're a complete beginner at it and excited about it anyway. That restless feeling you've been carrying around for months has finally found somewhere to go with itself.

It may well arrive through a person, because Pages are messengers, so somebody's enthusiasm gets you moving again after a flat spell you'd nearly stopped noticing. It might come as an invitation, a bit of news, something you overhear in passing that sets you off. However it turns up, the pull is to start something you've got no track record in at all, and the not knowing any of it yet is exactly what makes it fun. It can also be the return of something you loved as a kid and quietly put down, which is the loveliest version of this one. You're allowed to want something purely because it looks like a laugh.

Ace of Pentacles

A door opens at the very start of autumn and there's something solid on the other side of it. Aces don't carry a planet or a decan, they're the root of the whole element, pure potential before anything's been done with it, so this is a beginning with a lot of room in it. Money, work, a home of your own, a body that feels better than it has in ages, an offer that arrives with actual substance behind it. Whatever shape it takes, it's real and it can be built on and grown over time.

It tends to arrive quietly rather than with any fanfare at all. An email, an offhand mention, a small opportunity that doesn't look like much at all until you pick it up and turn it over in your hands. That's worth knowing, because the ones that turn up understated are easy to miss when you're waiting for something obvious. It can also be a first payment, a first client, a first real offer in a direction you've only been imagining until now. Luck really is with you on this, so if two options appear, take the one with the more solid floor under it rather than the one that sounds most exciting on the day.
