Something shifts in the sky today. On 14th September, Lilith crosses out of Sagittarius and into Capricorn, and she's going to sit there for the best part of a year. This one matters, so let's go through it in full, what Lilith actually is, where the myth comes from, where she's been, and what she's bringing you now.

What Lilith Actually Is

First things first, there isn't just one Lilith. Astrologers actually work with a few different points that all share the name, and it catches a lot of people out. There's the asteroid Lilith, a real physical rock orbiting out in the asteroid belt, discovered in 1927. There's Dark Moon Lilith, sometimes called Waldemath's moon after the astrologer who claimed to have spotted it, a hypothetical second moon that's never actually been confirmed to exist, more theory than fact. Black Moon Lilith isn't a planet or a moon, even though the name suggests one, it's the point in the sky that marks the furthest reach of the Moon's oval shaped orbit around the Earth, the spot where the Moon pulls away hardest. There's no rock sitting there, just a mathematical point that behaves like a live wire once it lands in a chart. It actually comes in two versions too, a mean one that moves smoothly and a true one that wobbles and can even swing backwards for a stretch. Most transit content, this piece included, is built around the mean version, since it moves at a steady, predictable pace.

But the story most of us actually know comes from a much later Jewish text called the Alphabet of Ben Sira. In it, Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the same earth as him at the same moment, not from his rib the way Eve later would be. She saw herself as his equal, and when it came to lying together, she refused to be underneath him. Neither of us should submit to the other, she said, we were made the same way. Adam tried to force the matter, so Lilith spoke the unspeakable name of God, grew wings, and flew out of Eden of her own choosing.

God sent three angels after her to bring her back. She said no. As punishment, she was told a hundred of her children would die every day, and in some versions of the story, she took that grief and turned it outward, becoming a danger to human infants unless a household kept the three angels' names close by as protection. Centuries later, in the Kabbalistic tradition, she grows into something even bigger, a queen of the left hand side, the shadow consort, the embodiment of feminine power that refuses to be governed.

Strip away the demon dressing and what's actually there is a woman who was offered equality, had it taken back, and chose exile over shrinking. That's why modern astrology reads her the way it does, as the part of you that would rather leave than make yourself smaller to stay welcome.

Where She's Been: Lilith In Sagittarius

For the best part of this year, Lilith has been moving through Sagittarius, the sign of belief, truth telling, philosophy and the horizon you haven't reached yet. Under this Lilith, the wildness came out through your mouth and your convictions. You may have felt less willing to nod along with a belief system that never actually fit you, less patient with people who wanted you to keep your opinions polite and small. Some of you said the unpopular thing out loud for the first time in years. Some of you got called too much for having a take at all.
